Quests for Glory is a 2017 fantasy, fairy tale novel written by Soman Chainani. It is the first book in The Camelot Years trilogy and the the fourth book overall in The School for Good and Evil series. The book takes place six months after the events of the third book, The Last Ever After.

Synopsis[]

If Good and Evil can’t find a way to work together, neither side will survive.

With every end comes a new beginning in the fourth installment of Soman Chainani’s New York Times bestselling School for Good and Evil series, Quests for Glory. Join Sophie, Agatha, Tedros, and the other students as they begin a new era in the Endless Woods—The Camelot Years—where Evers and Nevers alike must move beyond the bounds of school and into the biggest, boldest adventures of their lives.

The students at the School for Good and Evil thought they had found their final Ever After when they vanquished the malevolent School Master. Now, on their required fourth-year quests, the students face obstacles both dangerous and unpredictable, and the stakes are high: success brings eternal adoration, and failure means obscurity forever.

For their quests, Agatha and Tedros are trying to return Camelot to its former splendor as queen and king. For her quest, Dean Sophie seeks to mold Evil in her own image. But soon they all feel themselves growing more isolated and alone. When their classmates’ quests plunge into chaos, however, someone must lead the charge to save them…[1]

Plot[]

The story begins showing that Agatha has been neglected and ignored by Tedros for the past six months for an unknown reason related to his coronation. Suddenly, he sneaks into her room and curls up on her bed, crying. However, before they have to talk to each other, a tall, turbaned woman appears in the doorway and Tedros disappears. Agatha is upset that she hasn't even spent time with her fiancé for the past six months, and has been struggling with preparing for her wedding.

Camelot is in a state of collapse, with the divide between the wealthy and poor worse than ever, with corrupt advisors from Arthur's rule passing shady laws in favor of the rich, while plunging the middle class into poverty. Though Tedros had promised to resettle the homeless, as well as revoke these laws, no action had been taken, leading to the peasants growing resentful of Tedros and Agatha, especially after Tedros' "coronation."

Six months before, at Tedros' coronation, he gave a speech, and made the mistake of presenting Guinevere and Lancelot to the kingdom, to Lady Gremlaine's horror, as well as enraging many people who felt betrayed by Guinevere's past actions. When the coronation didn't go as Tedros had hoped, he attempted to seal his coronation. To be declared king, Tedros had to pull Excalibur from a stone, just as his father once did. However, as he pulled at the sword, it didn't move. No matter how hard he pulled , the sword seemed to wedge itself deeper into the stone archway it was lodged in. The coronation ended in disaster, as the crowd proclaimed that Guinevere and Lancelot had cursed the people and Camelot, and declared them monsters and traitors, shouting for their deaths.

Meanwhile, Sophie is now the Dean of Evil, drastically changing things in the School for her fairy-tale Quest, supposedly to "bring Evil into a new age." The teachers barge into her office, and berate her about the changes Sophie has done to the School. Clarissa Dovey marches in, and tells Sophie that the School Master would prevent her from going through with this, to which she replies that there is no School Master, unperturbed. Dovey meets Sophie's eyes, saying that would change.

Hester, Anadil, and Dot have been searching for a suitable candidate to be the new School Master, as part of their fairy-tale Quest. After interviewing an official, they check in with Dovey for their daily report. A "bubble" created by Dovey's crystal ball appears, with Dovey looking frazzled and her surroundings a mess. Dovey declares their quest over, and tells them to return to the School, needing them for a matter more important than finding a new School Master.

Agatha is occupied with memorizing the names of guests for her wedding, until she comes across a starry cape that transports her to Merlin's Celestium, a wizard's thinking place. Tedros and Merlin are there, and Merlin explains that the rest of their classmates are having difficulty with their Quests. Merlin says that perhaps Excalibur isn't allowing Tedros to pull the sword, because there is someone else more worthy to the throne that hasn't pulled it yet. He also considers that someone is controlling Exalibur, preventing Tedros from sealing his coronation, and discovering the true reason why the sword cannot be pulled is Tedros' Quest. After Agatha and Tedros have a heartfelt talk, Agatha tells Tedros that he isn't alone and she'll help him with his Quest. She decides to visit Sophie, feeling guilty not contacting her after half a year.

In Avalon, Chaddick somehow enters the gates to the Lady of the Lake's domain, which is supposed to be something only the King of Camelot and Merlin can do. He is attacked by a masked assailant with incredible strength, and is stabbed. Two weeks prior, he deviated from his original Quest, and discovered that everything from his classmates' failing Quests, to the several attacks on countless kingdoms, to Excalibur being unable to be pulled, was connected and the work of a new villain aiming to destroy Camelot, and rule the Endless Woods. After being attacked, Chaddick rushes to where the Lady of the Lake resides, and begs her to save him as he is one of Camelot's knights. However, the Lady of the Lake doesn't look at him, but at his soon-to-be killer and smiles at them.

Afterwards, at a dance that Sophie organizes, Dovey tells Sophie that she must embark on a quest to save her classmates failing quests before any more of them die. Sophie is shocked because her Quest Map shows them being successful in their quests, but Dovey shows her own Quest Map, which shows all of their names in red, with Chaddick's dripping blood, signifying his death. She also divulges that the Storian hasn't written anything in the past 6 months, and that their names are in red because their Quests no longer apply, meaning there is a more important Quest that awaits them. At this time, Agatha sails in on the Igraine, and the Storian begins writing a new tale. The group rushes to the School Master's Tower, where the Storian writes of a "Snake" planning to take down a "Lion," and enlists Sophie, Agatha, Hester, Anadil, Dot, William, Bogden, and 'unexpectedly,' Nicola to lead the quest to take down the Snake, with Hort tagging along despite not being amongst those named by the Storian.

After Nicola saves the rest of the crew from a raging storm with her vast knowledge as a Reader, she asks Agatha about her apparent recognition of the terms the Storian used, to which Agatha explains that "The Lion and the Snake" was a fairy tale almost exclusively told in Camelot, about a Lion and Snake who both claimed the throne to a kingdom, with an Eagle to be make the final choice of who would be king. The Eagle asked whether he would be subject to the kingdom's rule, which the Lion said yes, and be granted protection, but the Snake said the Eagle would be as free as before. The Eagle chose the Snake, but all eagles were attacked that night, without any protection. The Snake didn't see anything wrong with this, because the Eagle technically did have freedom, but the Lion found this unjust and killed the Snake, but not before the Snake threatened to return and take back the crown after his death. The Lion became the new king, and defended all, in case of the Snake's return, and the tale ends, explaining "how Camelot came to be." The group concludes that Tedros is the Lion, but the Snake's identity is still unknown, and Agatha decides to travel to Avalon, wondering why the Snake is only attacking Camelot's neighboring regions, instead of the kingdom itself if they really were after Camelot's throne.

As the group reach Avalon, they meet a suspicious beaver offering a tour guide, which they accept after hearing that it met Chaddick. They find out that the Lady of the Lake—though immortal, beautiful, and with infinite magic—is cursed to "lose everything if she ever kisses a boy," from Ajubaju. When they come across the lake, they discover that Chaddick's body has disappeared. After Agatha and Sophie follow a crimson trail of blood, they find parchment with Camelot's seal, but with snakes in the grasp of Chaddick's moved corpse. Following their discovery, the duo hear Nicola scream, and learn that Ajubaju was hired by an individual with a green mask to assassinate them. The group attempts to contact the Lady of the Lake, but doesn't receive an answer. When Sophie and Agatha decide to swim towards a figure in the distance, Agatha sinks to her neck, but Sophie somehow starts walking on the surface of the water. When she reaches the silhouette, she finds a horrifying hag—but with the same beautiful voice of the Lady. From there, the Lady divulges to Sophie that she kissed the Snake and let Chaddick be murdered because the Snake "had Arthur's blood," and her first loyalty was bound to the King of Camelot. After a close call with snakes and pirate gold inside the walls of Avalon, the crew of the Igraine communicate with Professor Dovey through the crystal ball and decide to head to Jaunt Jolie, where Beatrix and fellow questmates were assigned.

Afterwards, Tedros and Lady Gremlaine have a talk, with Lady Gremlaine revealing her past with the king, confessing that she was so harsh on Tedros and Agatha because they reminded her of Arthur and Guinevere, back when they were naive and unknowing. Tedros promises to stand up for her, no matter what his mother says, but forgets once Guinevere, Merlin, Dovey, and Lancelot break into the castle. When Tedros remembered he had a steward, Lady Gremlaine was already gone.

Merlin discloses that The Lion and the Snake isn't actually a real fairy tale written by the Storian, but made up by a king of Camelot who portrayed himself as the Lion and his brother as the Snake to portray himself as the superior option. He suggests that the Snake must share the same views with the Snake in the story, that his throne was wrongly taken from him, and is coming to take it back. Dovey shows Tedros an excerpt from the Storian's new tale, depicting the Lady of the Lake telling Sophie that the Snake had Arthur's blood. After discussing several possibilities of what that could mean, Tedros finally decides to take action and build an army, and find out where all of Camelot's funds are going to. In the middle of the night, he decides to go meet the advisors in Camelot's prison. On the way, he meets a guard and discovers that Lady Gremlaine has left the castle for her home, as revealed by a guard named Kei. Kei shows Tedros the entrance to the prison and he heads down to meet the advisors, leaving Kei and ordering him to shut the door behind him. In the prison, the advisors heckle Tedros and offer no insight on where Camelot's money has gone. When Tedros tries to leave the prison, he isn't able to open the door and eventually falls asleep.

Meanwhile, the crew of the Igraine has been captured by pirates in Jaunt Jolie, where they are being taken to meet the Snake for the first time. While being dragged in chains through this kingdom, they discover that each crew member has bounties on their head. Sophie sees a flyer that says the queen of Jaunt Jolie's bounty has been claimed and that she has been executed. However, on the way to meet the Snake and that the royalty of Jaunt Jolie have been captured and are being held in cages, including the queen. Sophie realizes that the Snake had lied about executing the queen. Soon, Sophie and Agatha are ushered into a room to meet the Snake and are separated from the rest of the crew. They discover a book with a pen writing their story, much like the Storian. However, this pen is black and shiny like an eel. The Snake introduces himself to the girls and he is covered completely in these flexible eels, which he calls scims. He shows them that in his book, Tedros is the Snake while he is the Lion. The girls are utterly confused because the Snake seems reminiscent of Rafal in appearance and Tedros in scent. They try to outsmart him and get him to reveal his face, and the snake says that Rafal's weakness was kissing beautiful girls. He then says that he too shared the same weakness for someone in their fairytale: Aric. The Snake covers Agatha and Sophie in scims and transports them to Four Point, while pirates drag the other 7 members of the Igraine crew there as well. At Four Point, they see a gallows that holds not only the royalty of the four kingdoms that connect at that location, but also all the other missing fourth year classmates.

The Snake attempts to execute prisoners, but they work together to avoid falling through the trapdoors to their deaths. Beatrix and Reena arrive atop Millicent the deer and help the prisoners use fire to burn off the nooses made out of scims. Battle ensues, and the end seems near after the Snake kills Millicent with a scim through the heart and has Agatha and Sophie pinned. However, a man referred to as the Lion, who is first thought to be Tedros with a gold lion mask, rescues the girls. The Snake vanishes and Sophie takes the mask off the Lion who is a boy about their age who no one has ever seen before. He kisses her and vanishes.

Lancelot and Guinevere unlock Tedros from the prison the next day, and take him to a room where numerous Ever and Never leaders are in a meeting, where they tell him what happened at Four Point the night before. While in the meeting, numerous leaders (Tedros included) receive messages of how the Lion has foiled the Snake's attacks in their kingdoms. Tedros' message is asking that they meet up to create a plan, and is signed "Your Loyal Knight". The leaders of other kingdoms are impressed with the Lion's display of kinglike behavior, and Tedros decides to meet the Lion in Sherwood Forest. Tedros leaves for Sherwood Forest with Lancelot. Lancelot tells Tedros to head straight for Sherwood Forest, but Tedros decides that they investigate Nottingham first and search for Lady Gremlaine, since Nottingham is her hometown. Tedros and Lancelot find her home ravaged by scims, and Lady Gremlaine wounded in the attic. Tedros tries to get her to explain the Snake's origins and Lady Gremlaine implies that she had a son with King Arthur before she is killed by scims. Tedros rushes out of the house just in time to witness the Snake slit Sir Lancelot's throat.

The Igraine crew is also heading to meet Tedros, because they have been made aware of the scims that have been seen in Nottingham. Nicola shows Agatha the quest map, which now shows the Lion on it and reveals his name to be Rhian. After the crew arrives in Nottingham, they search for signs of the snake. Eventually scims corner them in the sherrif's house, but they don't attack until Tedros bursts in the door. All of them fly to attack Tedros, but Rhian arrives and saves him. Tedros and Rhian fight the scims, and the battle ends when Dot traps the reformed Snake in an enchanted sack. In Sherwood Forest, a memorial is held for Lancelot and Lady Gremlaine. Agatha eavesdrops Rhian and Tedros having a heart-to-heart. She hears that Rhian is going on a date with Sophie at Beauty and the Feast, a famous restaurant. He casually mentions that Dot is there tonight on a date as well. Tedros says that Agatha would make fun of a place like that, and this prompts Agatha to ask Tedros if they could go somewhere nice for dinner. After the fantastic meal, the couples (Sophie and Rhian, Tedros and Agatha) walk through the forest, passing Anadil and Hester cozied up by a fire and Hort and Nicola on their first date. They make their way to the Arrow, Maid Marian's pub. They find Dot passed out on a table, and it is revealed that her date, Kei, drugged her drink and persuaded her to give him her keys, which he used to release the Snake from the Nottingham jail.

Aboard the Igraine, Professor Dovey speaks to the crew along with Tedros and they devise a plan for defending Camelot from the Snake. The group splits into two teams, one led by Tedros in Camelot castle, developing defense, and one led by Rhian in the town to recruit an army. Tedros is checking on his teammates when William and Bogden tell him that Nicola found a trail of stars. Suspecting Merlin, Tedros follows the trail of stars leading to Merlin's cloak. He meets Merlin in the Celestium, who tells him that he visited the Lady of the Lake who gave him a message from Excalibur: "unbury me". This is the same message Tedros received from King Arthur in a dream. Merlin tells Tedros to ponder this information and also consider who the Snake's Eagle is, since Tedros has found an Eagle in Rhian. They also talk about Rhian, and when Tedros mentions that he attended the Foxwood school for boys, Merlin tell Tedros to ask Rhian what house he was in. Merlin mentions that his friend was in charge of Arbed house, but that it was unlikely that Rhian would have been in Arbed. Meanwhile, as Rhian's team recruits the army, it becomes clear that all the inhabitants of the woods are more excited about following Rhian, the Lion, than they are about Tedros. The Snake interrupts the day with a message in they sky, declaring that something will happen tonight, at midnight. The new army enters the hall of the castle to hear Tedros rally the troops, but soon they ask the Lion to speak. Rhian takes over and gives a rousing speech, rallying the crowd for Tedros.

As the heroes eat dinner and prepare for battle, Tedros speaks to Rhian and asks what house he was in, and Rhian says that he was in Arbed house. Meanwhile, Nicola speaks to Sophie and asks her if she thinks the Snake's attacks have been odd because they are always seemingly announced in advance. Dinner is interrupted when a haggard Professor Dovey arrives. She has gotten increasingly ill due to the crystal ball she uses to communicate with the fourth year students, and has just cast a defensive shield over Camelot castle. Agatha and Sophie take her to rest in Agatha's room. Agatha confides in Sophie that she has doubts about Tedros being a good king, and Tedros overhears. Tedros says that Agatha is right about him when all of a sudden the Snake attacks. Sophie realizes that the shield is still intact, which means that the Snake has been inside the shield the whole day.

After a vicious battle, the Snake reveals himself to Rhian and Tedros. Tedros fights the Snake alone, but is slowly losing. When he is at the verge of death, Agatha orders Rhian to finish off the snake. Rhian breaks the Snake's neck. Tedros tells Agatha that she always holds him back, and that she is preventing him from being king. The next day, everyone gets ready for a royal celebration. Merlin is there too, and mentions to Agatha that she needs to keep Dovey's crystal ball safe. Tedros gives a speech to the people and brings Rhian up so that he can offer his ceremonial gift. Tedros expected Rhian to offer a gift to Agatha, his queen, but instead he asks Sophie to marry him, and she accepts.

While everyone is caught up in this new development, Merlin asks Tedros what house Rhian was in. After Tedros says it was Arbed house, Merlin says that Arbed house is for notoriously Evil boys, so Evil that they are a threat to the woods. They are magically concealed from the School Master and efforts are made to turn them to good. Merlin also reveals that Kei was in Arbed house, and his roommate was Aric. Agatha overhears all this and starts to make connections. The Snake had said he was good friends with Aric. Kei was Aric's roommate, and also one of the Snake's henchmen. If Rhian had been in Arbed house, should he not know all of these boys? Agatha notices one of the guards holding the plank with the Snake's body is actually one of the pirates from Jaunt Jolie, and follows them as they carry the body back into the castle. She turns a corner and finds the Snake, alive. Realizing that the Lion was the real Snake all along, Agatha rushes to find Tedros just as he offers his gift to his knight: anything he could ask for. Rhian asks for only one thing: the key around Guinevere's neck, which unlocks the case to Excalibur. Agatha shouts to alert Tedros, but she is too late.

Rhian smoothly pulls Excalibur from the stone balcony and declares himself as king. The crowds chant his name, as he sentences Tedros and anyone who is still loyal to him to death. Agatha notices that Sophie is unable to run, and upon inspection sees that Rhian has Excalibur up against her spine. Either she plays the role of his princess or is killed. Agatha runs, fleeing from guards. The Snake has become the Lion and the Lion has become the Snake.
